Enjoyed the interview, especially considering that my son plays hockey and I have had 3 boys come up through the ranks.
My point of contention with him would be his comment that it is most important to be peaking at 17-19 years of age. While I completely agree with that, the fact is that college hockey programs are identifying players at a much earlier age and committing those players as sophomores or even younger.
I have seen too many players who should absolutely play college hockey never get an opportunity for the simple reason that they were not identified early enough to get that level of attention. At the same time, I have seen players who were identified early stall in their development, but still move on to college.
When you add to that the example of his program not looking at any recruiting sites, and very little video, he is essentially admitting that they DO in fact give more weight to those players who peak early, and have name recognition.
In the case of hockey, this is sadly the same situation a player faces at the USHL and NAHL levels as well.
Patrick,
Thanks for you comments – we enjoy hearing from our listeners. I will speak with Coach Marottolo about your point and post his response here.
Thanks again!
Mark
Patrick,
I just spoke with C.J. and here is his reply:
This year we have 7 recruits coming to SHU and all but one is a 1994 birth year, the other young man was born in 1995, hence these young men coming here are older. We are not committing kids that are young, for the most part, we watch everyone we can all over the country trying to find the best possible student/athletes we can.
We do not give more weight to the players who develop early– I would say our program thrives on the late bloomer!!
He also offered to speak with you directly if you wish.
